Ipinroklama na ng Malacañang ang anim na mga bagong Pambansang Alagad ng Sining.

Biyernes ng gabi ng ianunsyo ni Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Sonny Coloma na nilagdaan na ni Pangulong Benigno Aquino III ang  Proclamation 807, 808, 809, 810, 811 at 812.

Laman ng nasabing mga proklamasyon ang paghirang kina Alice Reyes (Dance), Francisco Coching (Posthumous,Visual Arts), Cirilo Bautista (Literature), Francisco Feliciano (Music), Ramon Santos (Music}, at Jose Maria Zaragoza (Posthumous, Architecture, Design and Allied Arts) bilang mga Pambansang Alagad ng Sining.

Naging kataka-taka naman para sa mga tagahanga ni Superstar Nora Aunor ang hindi nito pagkakasama sa mga hinirang na National Artist.

Ang mga artistang naipoproklama bilang Pambansang Alagad ng Sining ay binibigyan ng isang grand collar na sumisimbolo sa kanilang katayuan at pagkakakilanlan bilang National Artist. Matapos pormal na maparangalan ay mapapasama na ang pangalan nila sa Orden ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining. Ang naturang parangal ay ang pinakamataas na pagkilalang ibinibigay sa isang indibidwal na nagkaroon ng dakilang ambag sa larangan ng sining.

Noong 2009 ay nabalot din ng kontrobersiya ang pagdedeklara ni dating pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo matapos nitong tanggalin sa isinumiteng listahan ng NCCA at CCP si Ramon Santos at idagdag naman ang mga pangalan nina Carlo Caparas, Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, Jose “Pitoy” Moreno at Francisco Mañosa.
